Solidigm D7-PS1030 Review: 3 DWPD Gen5 That Earned Its Keep in the KV Cache Tier

September 2, 2026
The Solidigm D7-PS1030 is a mid-endurance PCIe 5.0 data center SSD, sharing its platform with the D7-PS1010 but upgraded to a 3 DWPD endurance rating and 800K random write IOPS—double the standard-endurance PS1010. Built on 176-layer TLC NAND, the lineup spans 1.6TB to 12.8TB in E3.S and U.2 form factors, delivering up to 14,500 MB/s sequential read and 10,000 MB/s sequential write throughput. Optimized for write-heavy and mixed workloads including OLTP, metadata logging, HPC, and continuous AI/ML pipelines, the reviewed unit is the 12.8TB E3.S model.

This drive previously served as the flash offload tier in StorageReview’s KV cache inference testing, deployed as an eight-drive RAID10 array on a Dell PowerEdge XE7740. The setup sustained 1.9GB/s constant KV writes, yielding a 3.2 DWPD duty cycle under RAID10 mirroring and 1.6 DWPD in RAID0—perfectly aligning with the PS1030’s 3 DWPD baseline rating. This confirms endurance, not peak speed or capacity, is the critical constraint for KV cache offload workloads, where read-focused Gen5 SSDs would quickly exhaust their write budgets.

At 12.8TB, the PS1030 delivers 2.75 million 4K random read IOPS and its rated 800K 4K random write IOPS, with the family’s 3.1M read IOPS peak reserved for lower-capacity models. Typical active power is 23W (5W idle), with five configurable power states (5W–25W) for rack power budget flexibility. Solidigm claims 70% better energy efficiency than competing drives and 90% IOPS consistency over the drive’s lifespan. It supports elevated short-term endurance (4.98 DWPD over three years) with a 70PB total write rating for the 12.8TB model. Reliability features include a 2.5-million-hour MTBF, 5-year warranty, 1E-18 UBER rating, TCG Opal 2.02 SED encryption, FIPS 140-3 Level 2 certifiable hardware, and OCP-compliant secure firmware capabilities.

Test Platform & Competitors

Testing ran on a Dell PowerEdge R760 (Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS) with dual Intel Xeon Gold 6430 CPUs, 1TB+ DDR5 memory, Gen5 JBOF expansion, and an NVIDIA L4 GPU. Comparative drives include 1 DWPD models (Kioxia CD9P-R/CM9-R, WD SN861, Solidigm PS1010) and 3 DWPD high-endurance alternatives (Micron 7600 MAX, 9550 MAX/Pro).

DLIO AI Checkpointing Benchmark

Using Argonne’s DLIO v2.0 benchmark with a Llama 3.1 405B model simulation (8-GPU hybrid parallelism, 1,636GB checkpoint size), average checkpoint completion times across three test passes highlight consistent drive behavior. The PS1030 started mid-pack at 462.3s (Pass 1), rose to 578.0s (Pass 2), and topped the field at 599.2s (Pass 3). Performance degraded gradually with sustained large sequential writes, finishing ~5% slower than the Kioxia CD9P-R. This weakness stems from single-stream large-block write limitations, though performance scaled predictably without erratic swings.

FIO Steady-State Performance

All tests used standardized preconditioning with full drive sequential write fills to ensure steady-state accuracy.

128K Sequential (Single-Job)

The PS1030’s key weakness: sequential write throughput hit 6,370.3 MB/s (highest latency in the field), trailing all competitors including read-optimized drives. By contrast, sequential read throughput reached 14,156.4 MB/s, nearly matching class-leading performance and losing minimal ground to rivals. This confirms the drive is optimized for parallel workloads, not single-stream writes.

64K Random Workloads

Random write performance defines the PS1030’s strengths: it peaked at 7,224.0 MB/s at low queue depth (IODepth 2), sustaining flat, stable throughput with low latency, outperforming the PS1010 by 23%. Its worst-case write latency was less than half the PS1010’s spike, ideal for steady-state enterprise write tiers. For random reads, the PS1030 led the field at 14,162.9 MB/s with excellent multi-queue scalability, only lagging competitors in single-thread low-queue response.

16K Sequential Workloads

Representative of real-world AI pipeline traffic, 16K sequential writes peaked at 5,977.7 MB/s (mid-pack) but delivered ultra-low 10.9µs single-stream latency, matching top-tier rivals. The drive saturated quickly at low queue depths and maintained stable throughput, suiting continuous staging and caching workloads. 16K sequential reads reached 11,142.8 MB/s, trailing leading read-optimized SSDs but sufficient for mixed-use scenarios.

4K Random Workloads (Core Strength)

As a high-endurance drive, the PS1030 excelled in 4K random workloads. Random write IOPS hit 1,595.8K—nearly double its rated spec, second only to the Micron 7600 MAX. It delivered class-leading single-digit microsecond latency at low queue depths with a tightly capped worst-case latency of 359.6µs, perfectly suited for OLTP logging and KV cache traffic. 4K random reads peaked at 2,255.8K IOPS (second in field), balancing strong write performance with solid read capability for mixed workloads.

GPU Direct Storage (GDS) Performance

GDS testing validates direct GPU-to-storage throughput for AI workloads. The PS1030 showed modest single-thread 16K read performance but scaled strongly to a peak 5.95 GiB/s at 1M block size, nearly matching top competitors. The primary flaw appears in high-thread 128K GDS writes: throughput collapses sharply at deep queue depths, mirroring the PS1010’s platform-level limitation. Critically, this issue only occurs at extreme multi-threaded write loads. At the moderate concurrency used in production KV cache deployments, the drive maintained stable, bottleneck-free performance during weeks of continuous operation.

Conclusion

The Solidigm D7-PS1030 is a purpose-built mid-endurance Gen5 SSD tailored for sustained write-heavy enterprise and AI workloads. Its core strengths include industry-leading low-queue random write latency, stable parallel small-block performance, reliable endurance for 24/7 caching duty cycles, and full-speed Gen5 sequential reads. It outperforms standard-endurance drives in write sustainability and latency consistency, holding steady under KV cache offload duty cycles that exceed baseline 3 DWPD ratings.

τελευταία εταιρεία περί Solidigm D7-PS1030 Review: 3 DWPD Gen5 That Earned Its Keep in the KV Cache Tier 2

Key tradeoffs include weak single-stream large-block sequential writes, slower DLIO checkpointing under prolonged load, and high-thread GDS write degradation. These limitations are platform-specific and do not impact its target use cases. Ideal for KV cache offload, AI inference staging, OLTP logging, and metadata tiers, the PS1030 delivers cost-effective, endurance-optimized performance where read-focused Gen5 SSDs cannot sustain continuous write pressure, making it a strong choice for modern long-context AI infrastructure.
