Spectra Logic has rolled out its new Media Insight offering, designed to simplify finding, previewing and restoring archived video media.
Media Insight forms part of Spectra’s Rio Media Suite, a subscription-based media archiving platform (MAP). It leverages AI enrichment during content discovery, analyzing archived video footage to detect scenes and other visual elements. This enables faster discovery and retrieval within media archives, delivering better exploration and personalization compared to relying solely on system file metadata and manual content tagging.
Hossein ZiaShakeri, SP and GM of Media and Telecom at Spectra Logic, said: “Media archives contain enormous amounts of valuable content, but that value is limited when people cannot easily find and access what they need. Media Insight brings intelligence and visual discovery to the archive, making it easier for organizations to find, understand, preview, and restore the right content using visual and metadata context, then retrieve only what they need, supporting ongoing production and efficient content reuse.”

Media Insight generates thumbnails and proxy files, supports metadata-driven search, AI-assisted enrichment, and access to linked production assets. Media teams can locate, preview, examine and assess content before pulling high-resolution source files. Users may select just the required segment of a file and use timestamped Partial File Restore to recover only that portion of the media.
Spectra states that by supporting workflows spanning search through targeted restore, Media Insight can streamline archive operations and make archived media more accessible and usable for live production and content repurposing.
Spectra Logic will showcase this new capability at IBC, September 11–14 at Booth 7.C01.
A wide range of competing products and services exist in this space.
Back in November 2022, Quantum was developing AI software capable of scanning unstructured data held on its StorNext file system and ActiveScale object storage to identify elements inside videos, images and documents. AI-generated metadata would be imported into CatDV and used as an index for media asset search, helping users locate material for reference or reuse when creating broadcast news.
Four years later Quantum noted its media asset management application connects with leading AI services to log and tag content via functions including speech-to-text and automated language translation. It can automatically search assets based on attributes such as people, locations, objects and sentiment.
In January 2024, S3 cloud storage provider Wasabi acquired AI-powered video content indexing technology, planning to launch a dedicated storage tier for the entertainment and media sector. The product is now named Wasabi AiR.
September 2024 saw a digital asset management vendor add its AI-enabled tools to Seagate Lyve Cloud Object Storage, aiming to boost data discovery for their shared media and entertainment clients. Starchive allows the combined platform to integrate with any AI solution such as AWS Object Rekognition, enabling users to tag, group, manage and enrich their media assets. Advanced metadata features help users locate, organize and share objects within Seagate’s Lyve Cloud Object Storage, while content preview and low-latency streaming deliver high-fidelity previews without altering original source files.
In August last year, Arcitecta upgraded its Mediaflux data access and management fabric into an AI-ready platform with structured and unstructured data support, a vector database, and compatibility with AI models.
Other competitors include Magnifi, Moments Lab, Twelve Labs, Veritone Digital Media Hub, and VIDA Content S, plus the three major public cloud offerings: Azure AI Video Indexer, Amazon Rekognition Video, and Google Cloud Video Intelligence.
Bootnote Two years ago Spectra Logic launched its content management and archiving application built for Avid Media Composer environments. Its capabilities included comprehensive search to filter and discover assets across many metadata and content types, plus elastic scaling of performance and availability from a handful of users up to hundreds.
